Automated Manual (AMT/AGS)

A manual gearbox with an automated clutch and shifter. The most affordable automatic option, but can be jerky.

♾️

Continuously Variable (CVT/IVT)

🌊

Torque Converter (TC/AT)

The traditional automatic. Uses fluid coupling. Very smooth and reliable, handles high power well.

🏎️

Dual Clutch (DCT/DSG)

Uses two clutches for lightning-fast shifts. Performance-oriented but complex and can heat up in traffic.

The Ultimate Test Drive Checklist

Don't just drive—evaluate. Use this interactive checklist to ensure the car meets your specific needs on Indian roads.

Expert Guides

Used Car Detective Guide

Don't get scammed. Inspect like a pro.

Major Red Flags

  • 1. Seatbelt Date: Check the manufacturing tag on the bottom of the seatbelt. If it's newer than the car, the car was likely in a major crash.
  • 2. Glass Codes: All windows should have the same brand and year code. Mismatched glass = Accident replacement.
  • 3. Pedal Wear: Low km on odometer but worn-out brake/clutch rubber pads? Odometer is tampered.

Document Checklist

  • Hypothecation Removed: Ensure RC does not have a bank name, or get a valid Bank NOC.
  • Insurance NCB: Ask for the previous year's insurance policy. If No Claim Bonus (NCB) is 0%, a claim was made (accident).
  • Service History: No service record = No deal. It proves genuine mileage.

How to Spot a Flood-Damaged Car?

The Smell Test

Close all windows and sit inside for 2 mins. A musty, damp smell is a dead giveaway of water soaking.

Rust Spots

Check unpainted metal parts under the dashboard (use a torch) and seat rails. Rust here is unnatural.

Seat Belts

Pull the seatbelt all the way out. Look for water stains or fungus at the very end.

Service Center Secrets

Save thousands on your next bill.

The "Value Added" Trap

Service Item Verdict Reality
Engine Flush AVOID Modern oils have detergents. Flushing can damage seals in older engines.
AC Disinfection DIY They just spray a foam. Buy a can for ₹300 and do it yourself.
Nitrogen Air GOOD Maintains pressure longer and keeps tyres cooler on highways.
Wheel Balancing MUST Do it every 5,000-10,000 km to prevent uneven tyre wear.

Authorized Service Center

  • ✓ Best for cars under warranty
  • ✓ Genuine parts guaranteed
  • ✗ Expensive labor charges
  • ✗ Push unnecessary add-ons

Trusted Local Garage

  • ✓ 30-50% cheaper
  • ✓ You can watch the work happen
  • ✗ Risk of fake parts (Buy parts yourself)
  • ✗ Complex electronics diagnosis is hard

Mileage Booster Guide

Extract every km from every drop.

The 2000 RPM Rule

Sweet Spot
Idle 1500-2500 Redline

Shift gears between 1500 and 2500 RPM. Lugging the engine (high gear, low speed) consumes MORE fuel than revving high.

AC vs Windows Down

Below 45 km/h Windows Down
Above 45 km/h Use AC

Why? At high speeds, open windows create "Aerodynamic Drag" (like a parachute), forcing the engine to work harder than the AC compressor does.

Fuel Station Hacks

  • 1. Fill in Morning: Fuel is denser when cold. You get slightly more mass of fuel for the same volume in early mornings.
  • 2. Don't Top Off: Once the nozzle auto-cuts, STOP. Forcing more fuel fills the expansion tank and vapor recovery system, wasting money.
  • 3. Density Check: Look for the density display on the pump. Petrol should be 720-775 kg/m³, Diesel 820-860 kg/m³. If lower, it's adulterated.

Paint Protection Reality

Teflon vs Ceramic vs PPF - The Truth.

Type Cost (Approx) Life Scratch Protection Gloss
Wax / Teflon ₹1k - ₹3k 1-3 Months None High
Ceramic Coating ₹15k - ₹30k 2-4 Years Minor Swirls Extreme
Graphene ₹25k - ₹40k 3-5 Years Minor Swirls Extreme
PPF (TPU) ₹60k - ₹1.5L 5-10 Years High (Stone Chips) High

The "Teflon" Scam

Most dealerships sell "Teflon Coating" for ₹5,000-₹8,000. Real Teflon (PTFE) requires 300°C to bond, which would melt your car's plastic. What they apply is just a cheap machine wax polish that washes off in 3 weeks. Refuse it.

Ceramic vs PPF?

Ceramic is for gloss and ease of cleaning (hydrophobic). It does NOT stop stone chips or key scratches.

PPF (Paint Protection Film) is a thick plastic skin. It is the ONLY thing that protects original paint from stone chips, bike handle scratches, and minor rubs.

Accessories Guide

What you need vs What voids warranty.

Must Have

  • Dashcam: Dual channel (Front+Rear). Crucial evidence for accidents in India.
  • Tyre Inflator: 12V digital inflator. Don't rely on petrol pumps.
  • Jumper Cable: For when battery dies unexpectedly.
  • Blind Spot Mirrors: Small convex mirrors for safer lane changes.
  • Microfiber Cloths: For cleaning dust without scratching paint.
  • Window Breaker: Emergency tool to cut seatbelt and break glass.

Comfort

  • Magnetic Sunshades: Legal alternative to sun film.
  • Neck/Back Cushions: Memory foam is best for long drives.
  • 7D Mats: Easy to clean and protects original carpet.
  • Car Air Purifier: Essential for city driving to reduce PM2.5.
  • Boot Organizer: Keeps your trunk tidy and noise-free.
  • Door Visors: Lets you crack windows open during rain.

Warranty Killers

  • Wire Splicing: Cutting ANY original wire for audio/lights voids electrical warranty instantly. Use "Couplers".
  • High Watt Bulbs: 100/90W bulbs melt reflectors/wiring and void warranty.
  • Oversize Tyres: Upsizing beyond 2-3% voids suspension & steering warranty.
  • CNG/LPG Kits: Aftermarket kits void engine warranty. Only factory-fitted is safe.
  • ECU Remapping: "Stage 1" tunes are easily detected by service centers and void engine warranty.
  • Hardwiring Dashcam: Cutting wires to hardwire voids warranty. Use a "Fuse Tap" instead.
  • Push Start Button: Retrofitting this requires bypassing the immobilizer. Huge security risk + Warranty void.
  • Aftermarket Sunroof: Cutting the roof weakens the chassis structure. Voids structural warranty.
